Bug Description

This is a minor bug, actually it is more of a request than anything else, and I couldn't find a place to post it other than "report a bug" so this will probably have to be moved from the buglist to somewhere else. This is a reccomendation moreso than it is a bug.

Anyway, I reccomend that the package gtk2-engines-gtk-qt (I am pretty sure thats what its called) to be removed from kubuntu-destkop.

The reason being is because I love both Gnome and KDE, so I always have both kubuntu-desktop and ubuntu-desktop installed. (I'm sure I'm not the only one). My understanding is that gtk2-engines-gtk-qt makes your GTK apps look like KDE apps, so they don't look plain while running KDE. The problem with this is that if you run both Gnome and KDE, this app practically destroys Gnome. Some things don't draw correctly, and besides, when I run Gnome, I want to run Gnome, not QT. (For some reason, when I choose to run Gnome at an instance instead of KDE, gtk-qt is still running even though I'm not running KDE!). At the very least, if there is an option to disable it while running Gnome, I can't see it.

This is especially apparent because I use Evolution between both KDE and Gnome.

No offense, I was just curious why this was rejected. For people like me that
run both KDE and Gnome, the package GTK-QT is a definite problem more than it
is a resolution. Having both KDE and Gnome share the same theme is in my
opinion silly.

In the latest upstream version it is now possible to choose a different theme when running GNOME.

I'm not sure what you mean by Upstream, but I just installed the gtk-qt
package and it makes it impossible to change the theme in Gnome. In Gnome, QT
draws the windows no matter what theme you choose, in fact, it makes the
Gnome Theme Control crash. It's been this way for a while, which is why I
think it should be removed.

I'm definitely going to have to ask you to reopen this bug. I am apparently
not the only one that has this problem. There is discussion going on in the
forums right now and I've asked them to submit to this bug report.

Fixed upstream means it's fixed in gnome so it should be fixed with the next gnome sync. Therefore this bug can be closed again.

Thanks, you guys rock!

If you haven't already done what we are doing in the forums, it may be a
great way to improve the performance of this package a bit further. Here is
how the user Chavo is fixing this, in a way that Gnome does not read the
environment variable:

Jeremy, you reported this bug as occurring in malone, which is Launchpad's bug tracker. But the bug is not a problem with Launchpad's bug tracker, it is a problem with gtk-qt-engine. That's why it was rejected for malone. If you can explain why you accidentally associated it with Malone, please tell us in bug 88818. Thanks!

I didn't report it under Malone. For the package I chose "I don't know".

I updated my system today (apt-get update) and the updates included an update
for the package gtk-qt-engine.

When I chose Gnome as my session and then logged in, QT was drawing Gnome's
nautilus instead of its native GTK. I did not get to see if gnome-panel was
being drawn with QT because the panels wouldn't load at all even after a
reboot. (Not sure if its related).

The settings in kcontrol for this package do not fix the issue. Regardless of
which option you choose, QT is used for Nautilus rather than its native GTK.

My suggestion (I'm by no means an expert) is to move gtk-qt's initialization
file to a place only KDE can see it, so the file that triggers gtk-qt will be
hidden from Gnome.

In KDE, go to Systemsettings -> Aparience -> Gtk Styles and Fonts, in GTK Styles box, select what theme you want to use for GNOME aplications.
Start GNOME session and see if theme is aplied.

With Gutsy I haven't had any problems with this recently. You could probably close it for the time being and if the problem comes back I'll post information about it.
