Hi Robert :) Now that's weird. Can you try if unity --reset fixes the issue? (Though its highly unlikely that it is to blame). Also, do recent updates fix the issue?

Does not help.

The existing unity process segfaults:

The new one shows this:
$ unity --reset

RAOF and I talked on IRC:
16:59 < lifeless> RAOF: ohhai, are you a good person to talk to about unity theme bugs ?
16:59 < lifeless> RAOF: specifically bug 920746
16:59 < ubot2`> Launchpad bug 920746 in unity "themes wonky - looks bad" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/920746
17:00 < RAOF> lifeless: No, not really. Urgh, sympathies. That looks really annoying.
17:01 < RAOF> Something would appear to have gone weird in your gnome-settings-daemon, though.
17:03 < RAOF> lifeless: Could you install dconf-tools and check out the org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins tree? Particularly xsettings?
17:04 < RAOF> (Oh, with dconf-editor)
17:05 < lifeless> RAOF: what things from there do you want to know ?
17:05 < RAOF> lifeless: If I disable the xsettings plugin I get something that looks a lot like what you've got. Is the xsettings plugin enabled?
17:06 < lifeless> inactive, grayscale, nothing disabled, nothing enabled, medium hinting, priority 2, rgb
17:06 < RAOF> Tick the button to activate it.
17:06 < lifeless> theme works
17:07 -!- ejat [~fenris@ubuntu/member/fenris-] has joined #ubuntu-desktop
17:07 < lifeless> but I cannot move windows
17:07 < RAOF> Right.
17:07 < RAOF> Wait for compiz to finish its screaming hissy fit.
17:07 < lifeless> wow thats a long hissy fit

So my questions are: why was that disabled? Are there other plugins that may need to be enabled? Why didn't unity --reset fix this?

17:08 < RAOF> It's finished restarting after its crash?
17:08 < lifeless> I presume so
17:08 < lifeless> I can alt-tab now
17:09 < lifeless> sloppy-focus isn't anymore, but at least it looks nice ;)
17:09 < RAOF> :)
17:09 < lifeless> what other plugins should be on by default?
17:10 < RAOF> Everything.
17:10 < lifeless> hah
17:10 < lifeless> very very very much not the case
17:10 < RAOF> Are there any which are disabled?
17:11 < RAOF> Oh. gconf is the only one of mine which is disabled.
17:11 < RAOF> And that's just a migrate-from-gconf thing, so it probably turns itself off.
17:11 < lifeless> background, clipboard, font, gconf, housekeeping, keybindings, keyboard, media-keys, mouse, print-notifications, smartcard, sound, wacom, xrandr
17:12 < lifeless> (and xsettings, but its on now)
17:12 < RAOF> Ah.
17:12 < RAOF> So, your system is not so much of the working then.
17:12 < lifeless> should I turn them all (but gconf) on ?
17:12 < RAOF> Yes.

We then had a little sidetrack to reenable my trackpad after it went awol, ending with
17:23 < RAOF> xinput set-int-prop 10 274 8 0
17:23 < lifeless> ahha
17:23 < lifeless> thanks

and now from my user perspective, I'm happy, system no longer feels horrible... still want to understand how it got like this
