Bug Description

Platform: Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo L710GW laptop with 3 integrated usb 2.0 ports.
OS: Ubuntu 6.1
Sound card: Creative Sound Blaster Live 24bit Ext, USB

Problem:

The soundcard seems to be recognized, but it produces no real sound; only choppy "tok-tok-tok" sounds. The card did'nt start working even after a fresh OS install with the device connected during installation.

Alsamixer and gnome's sound manager show the card with one pcm slider, but adjusting volume is slow and seems to even hang for some time.

aplay -l lists the card as follows:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 1: External [SB Live! 24-bit External], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

lsusb produces the following:

Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 041e:3040 Creative Technology, Ltd
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

This really beats me - perhaps it is USB related? The gnome device manager lists the sound card in the usb 1.1 group.

It seems that some users have got sound off the shelf with ubuntu 6.1 and this card, without manual tinkering; at least according to some forum posts that i've found.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Do you mean you have Ubuntu 6.10 installed or Ubuntu 6.06.1? Additionally could you add the full output of 'dmesg' as an attachment with the soundcard connected? Thanks in advance.

The Ubuntu version is 6.10. I just downloaded it a week ago from the official site.

I have attached the output of dmesg as you requested.

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached it's end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task. However, can you confirm if this issue still exists in the Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS release or, alternatively the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha2 which is also scheduled for release today? It will appear at the following when available: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha2 . It contains the the actively developed 2.6.26 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test this upcoming release via a LiveCD and verify if the issue still exists. If so, please include the appropriate debugging information as outlined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems and set the status of the bug to 'new' and the bug will be reviewed again. Thanks in advance.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
