I'd like to see this done by adding a Tick Box:

[Add Comment] [ ] Subscribe to this bug.

Next to the existing Add/Post Comment button.

If we have a tick box, it should be ticked by default. LP is already too clicky as it is.

I also think this would be a very useful addition. I think that gnome's bugzilla implementation of this is handled well and should be referenced.

And yes, it should be opt out. If I add comment, I want to know about any other comments added to the bug.

The Subscribe tick box is only available when adding a comment at the bottom of the page.

Please also make it available when adding a comment at the top of the page (in drop-down change-status entry box).

Right, good point, I've got a fix on the way to pqm...

Is it possible to have the tick box automatically enabled?

Yes, that's how it used to be, but e-mail should always be opt-in.

I have a new suggestion. I never liked the way the tick box defaulted to being ticked but with an influx of commenters "hit 'n run" style questions appearing in comments. Commenters do not make it clear how to reach them and quite often when replying I am unaware that the commenter has not seen the reply until the commenter never follows up again and I check the subscribers list.

My suggestion is that this should be tied to the account's age and/or the accounts Karma. Opting out of automatic box ticking should become possible after time or kudos (whichever comes first I guess). This becomes especially important if Bug #58410 is fixed and it is no longer possible for people to subscribe others to bugs so the replies are seen.

I would like all further correspondence regarding a question that I have either commented, answered or otherwise updated be automatically emailed to me, this would allow me to improve my email filter and separate new questions and those that I have no interest in from the ones that I am interested in (ones I have commented or answered)

In my view this should be an option available (disabled by default) to all subscribed users and should be configurable in the user preferences page.

At the moment it's really hard to get accurate email filters and I occasionally miss an update to an email and only discover it when I check the "need attention" menu item in my launchpad answers page.

I have commented or updated several bug reports and later on it is a headache to remember which one it was if there is new info to add.

Unsubscribing is much easier on the other hand.

Anyway, why does anyone comment/update a page if they are not interested in knowing about later followups? And yet if it's the case, the person can just unsubscribe as soon as they get the first unwanted message.

Leo, this bug is about older work to add a checkbox that the user could click to subscribe him/herself when adding a comment. That work was done, and then we made commenting an inline, AJAX interaction and that checkbox was removed. This earlier work and requests to auto-subscribe when commenting have all blurred together, confusing me at times as well.

Please see bug 414401, which is the current open bug tracking the request to auto-subscribe users when commenting.
