After failed attempt to remove xorg-driver-fglrx using Restricted Drivers manager the Update manager reports the Software index is broken and refuses to run. Trying to remove xorg-driver-fglrx using "sudo apt-get install -f" as advised in the error box from Update Manager results in a similar error message. Looking in Synaptic I see the driver marked for removal, but cannot remove it.

Now I am unable to update. Wine and other programs run OK with the Mesa driver, but the un-removed xorg-driver-fglrx is preventing any changes to my software.

Help please! This driver package is supplied as part of Ubuntu Hardy and neither runs correctly when installed using Restricted Driver Manager nor removes correctly. I know the Ubuntu developers cannot do anything about the memory leaks in the driver itself, but surely the package should install and remove without causing problems.
