APT is a package management tool, it understands collections of packages called "repositories" and is able to find the packages needed to satisfy inter-package dependencies.
APT allows your Linux system to install and remove the packages that will fulfill package dependencies during a software upgrade. For example, say you want to install a new piece of software "foo", APT will detect that "foo" requires several other packages and if they are not already installed, can fetch them.
