Bug Description

crane tried to register a team but ended up registering a project. After some browsing in Launchpad, he found out how to create a team.

Crane's use case:
<"crane_work> when I went to register the project I started at the home page and clicked register. My thinking was that the group would be considered a project in general from launchpad.
<crane_work> I found the way to create a team after some searching under people>list all teams>register a team
<matsubara> crane_work: just to make it clear, you thought that the projects in launchpad were another terminology for group or you thought that registering a new project would automatically register a new group?
<crane_work> When I went to register of the front page, I noticed that it said project but thought the group would be considered a project. I did not know launchpad would consider them different. I thought I would be able to specify after I had it set up."

His suggestion how to fix the problem:
"<crane_work> May setting an option when one selects register. An option to register a project or group."

Changed in launchpad:
importance: Undecided → Medium
status: Unconfirmed → Confirmed

A lot of new Loco teams end up creating a project by accident and then correctly create their team. I just asked one such Loco admin about the process:

bac: was there some misleading documentation that led you to make the oops (creating the project by mistake)?
viridari: sort of
viridari: creating a team is a little more convoluted than creating a project in launchpad
viridari: ideally it would be just as easy to create one or the other but I had to click a couple levels deeper to figure out how to make a team
bac: ok, noted. there wasn't any loco-based docs that pushed you in that direction then? just confusing launchpad UI?
viridari: correct

Launchpad front page -> Register -> View people in the Actions Menu.

Maybe we could add a Register a team link beneath the Register a project?

If I remember correctly I found it misleading to register. If you go to the
site (not being familiar with it) to register a team, you would click the
register button, then use the search to see if you could find a team already
registered. But the search is only for projects. If I search from the home
page or the register page it shows no matches for "Alabama" There is an
Alabama Team. I did not know there was a drop down menu when I first came
here. Maybe adding a Search field for finding a group or people.
 Just a thought.

I have been searching for a way to create teams for a long time now, and just found out now by reading the content above.

A fix that would help me a great deal is by adding a comment on how to create teams at the page explaining how to offer mentoring:

When clicking on reister it bring you to register a project, ther eis no choice to register a team on that page.

I had same problem. Ended up asking on IRC channel where I got help from someone with the nick "stdin".

In my opinion there should be a link to information about registering teams on pages where you can select a team (like at the page for choosing driver of the project/series).

Salgado, for pages where you specify an owner this is already possible.
I wonder whether the right solution here isn't to use that same widget
anywhere you could possibly want to use a team?

Sounds like a good idea to me, but I think we should use the widget with
caution in the beginning, to avoid unnecessary teams being created.

It's very hard to find the link on Launchpad that lets you register a
new team. Someone else was just affected by this today.

It seems like this could be very easily fixed by considering where
people will probably look for it: on a product or on their person
homepage. Why not add an action to "register a new team" on the
person and project overviews.

At least then it's easy to describe how to get there: click your name
in the top right.
