Sorry thought I was reporting a bug against ubuntu. Never mind, I just
followed links from
the main ubuntu page to report a bug. No idea what malone is, so assumed
it was a bug report system.

Anyway after installation complete ubuntu would not boot so won't be using,
therefore please disregard.

I had the same problem with the m2n32 sli deluxe, but I found people with this problem with others motherboards.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=421876

http://www.ubuntu-es.org/index.php?q=node/46065

All related to Ubuntu or Kubuntu install with AMD64 arch.

At the boot we got the message:

Kernel alive
Kernel direct mapping tables up to 100000000@8000-d000

and the system freeze. With noapic and nolapic is possible to install Kubuntu, but after install the kernel hangs at the first step of the boot process.
If I boot the Feisty Kubuntu DVD with noapic and nolapic the boot freeze with this message for a while (30 to 40 seconds) and after this interval go on with the install process.
After the install, at the first boot I got the same "kernel direct mapping" message and the sistem freeze, if I use the noapci and nolapic at grub kernel line I got this message, after this a black screen and a total freeze, even the ctrl+alt+del is dead.

I tried noapci and nolapci at the grub line but it was impossible to start the boot process.
I upgraded the BIOS to the latest ASUS stable 706 and after to the latest beta version 1001, but I still having the same problem.
I tried a chroot, but I was using (at the install time) the Kurumin (Debian's son) 32 bits and the chroot failed. Now I have Mandriva 64 bits, so I can chroot.
If you guys have some kind of info request, please do it..! I will try to give you more details.
I and all the others guys tried the amd64 Kubuntu or Ubuntu install and gave up, changing for another distro because it was impossible to start the boot process. The system hangs up at the first kernel message.
With this rc.rattusrattus bug message I became motivated to try the install again and help the K-Ubuntu team to solve this problem.

This is pretty sad really.

I been all over the place, one of my posts even got marked as a copy of this post so I was sent here.

Still no answers. Honestly if people really wish Linux to be a suitable replacement for Windows or Mac OS then its going to need to be a little more predictable when it comes to installing.

Personally I like to get in my car and drive, I dont like having to pull over everyfew blocks to adjust something in my engine.

So far Ubuntu gets a big thumbs down on the install. Needs alot more work.

BTW, got Fedora to install right off the bat shame its so outdated. But that raises a question why is something so outdated like Fedora more "predictable" to install then Ubuntu?

Confirmed by forums, duplicates and people at this bug report.
There are reports of people working around this by removing "splash" and adding "noapic" to grub boot options.

I agree with sicundercover. Since Ubuntu appears to be THE distro of the present time it is quite disheartening to see that some very quite popular piece of hardware and also the SATA FakeRAID is not supported right out of the box. The Fedoras do that since the stone age without any additional boot parameters and have a leg up in regards to this issue, although I consider Fedora substandard in general. The repositories appear to run on dial up.
Any means on helping out to get this fixed in the next release?

This problem also shows up with the ASUS Crosshair mobo.

Additionally, one of the bootup messages says to use apic=debug and file a report, but using apic=debug does not have any effect - the same error display occurs.

Seems to be ok with gutsy though PC doesn't work with the splash kernel
parameter in grub/menu.lst and fsck can't run as it cannot resolve the UUID
disc descriptors. I will log bugs if required.
