libopenraw is MUCH faster at thumbnailing RAW files than dcraw. Please consider adding it to Ubuntu.

upstream libopenraw has the packaging in git. I know, I did it. With the package installed you just need to debuild gthumb.

So basically fixing the bug involve:
-package libopenraw with the upstream packaging
-add the -dev package as a build-depend in gthumb

libopenraw is now in universe: https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libopenraw

Since gthumb is in main, libopenraw would have to be promoted to main for it to be included with gthumb, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MainInclusionProcess.

This is now fixed as gthumb pulls in libopenraw1 when installed
