The crash actually occurs in ubuntu-drivers-common and it looks like it is missing a dependency on kmod which provides /sbin/modinfo.

kmod/module-init-tools are "priority Required", installed by default, and not that easy to remove. But I added an explicit dependency in the packaging git now.
