Bug Description

Binary package hint: amarok

Bug could be in amarok-xine, which is the output plugin I'm using. For description, see KDE bug: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=127652. My comment #10 (edited for clarity!) copied below, to save following the link:

As per default behaviour on inserting an audio CD into a machine running Kubuntu 7.04 (the popup appears and I press "amarok", since that's the only player presented, the other options being for ripping etc.), I use amarok to play CDs directly via cdda:/, using xine engine for output. Even after setting fadeout to 0, there is a significant gap (close to a second, even?) between tracks, which renders live recordings, or anything requiring continuity, very unpleasant to listen to.

I'm very happy to play CDs via CDDA, since I get better quality that way (decent sound card, not so decent D/A on the CD drive!), but not when the player inserts gaps in the audio stream! As well as the gap before the track starts after the previous one finishes, there's a very short pause / glitch after maybe a couple of seconds.

Standard Kubuntu 7.04 packages, amarok (and 'amarok-xine') version 2:1.4.5-0ubuntu7.

Should I report a bug here, even though I've already found a bug in an upstream database? If not, apologies.

Hi there!

Thank you for reporting that bug William. It should be reported here even though it exists upstream.

Just as a note, the KDE bug seems to be referring mainly to gapless _track_ playback (ogg, flac, mp3 etc.). Is it clear this is the same problem as gapless _CD_ playback?

The developer who resolved the KDE bug with a "works for me" noted, "[T]his bug is not valid with proper hardware and a proper current software set." Unfortunately he doesn't provide any hints as to what those are or what the appropriate configuration is. :-( He also suggests the problem is with xine and not Amarok.

One question: the "crossfading" option in Amarok does not allow a value smaller than 400ms. On some other media players gapless playback is obtained by turning crossfading on but setting the time to 0. Could this be relevant?

This bug is closed upstream. Also, this refers to a very old version of Amarok (1.4.5) which is not maintained anymore, so I close this bug for now. As explained in the upstream bug comments, this is not an Amarok bug but inherent to the mp3 format. Gapless playing of mp3 from a CD is very hard to achieve as explained here: http://mp3decoders.mp3-tech.org/decoders_lame.html.
