Bug Description

Now i can run Feisty Fawn with the 2.6.17-17-generic kernel, but not with the standard 2.6.20-15-generic kernel. To select the 2.6.20-15-generic kernel isn't possible. The first text line "starting up..." is shown, nothing else. The loading process doesn't start. What's that?

Information about my problem: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=421415 . I started a thread in the forum without success.

Best regards,
Bernhard

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug does not meet the criteria for a stable release update and is being marked as Won't Fix for this particular version of the kernel. You can learn more about the stable release update process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .
However, the issue that you reported is one that should be possible to test with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed kernel. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .
If you do decide to test with the development release of Ubuntu please comment on this bug report and include at least the minimal information requested at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Now i tried a Live-CD with U 7.10 Tribe 5: Surprise. I could start the Live-CD.

But only the safe graphics mode leads to a correct desktop. The VEGA mode shows a grey screen with one small window. Otherwise my PC doesn't load Ubuntu with the other graphic modes. I suppose this behaviour is caused by my old pc with a matrox millenium G450 AGP Dualhead graphic card (32 Mb SDRAM). I guess there isn't installed a driver for this card.

Bernhard - it would help us if you could submit a bug report regarding your video card issues so we can work on getting that resolved. You will want to submit the bug report regarding xorg and include the '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' file and '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' from the live environment in your bug report.

I mean a Live-CD driver problem, perhaps?

I'm not sure, whether the ...20.log.file would be interestingly for you.
Next and last att. follows...

Perhaps it's helpful.

Could you please also the full output of 'sudo lspci -vvnn' as an attachment to your bug report? Thanks again.

Hi Bernhard,

From your logs it looks like there may be an issue with your card accepting the DRI/GLX modules.
Could you please try changing the Modules section of your xorg.conf file to the following:

Section "Module"
 Load "bitmap"
 Load "ddc"
# Load "dri"
 Load "extmod"
 Load "freetype"
# Load "glx"
 Load "int10"
 Load "type1"
 Load "vbe"
EndSection

If that does not do it, then try changing it to this:

Section "Module"
 Disable "dri"
 Disable "glx"
EndSection

You may also need to comment out this section at the end of the xorg.conf:

# Section "DRI"
# Mode 0666
# EndSection

You could also try disabling one or the other, or try running with an empty Modules section.

Let us know how it goes.

This sounds similar to bug https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9711, although the symptoms as described are a bit different.

Hi Bryce,

disabling all modules and deleting the ' Section "DRI" ' leads to nothing: No start with the 2.6.20-Kernel.

But as i deactivated the whole Module-section i had to start with strg-alt-f2 (or 2?). Ubuntu didn't start in the grafic mode. Therefore i copied the backup-file to xorg.conf.

I dislike such experiences because i'm not a linux or unix expert.

The stepwise deactivation of the two modules, what you suggested, shows no effect.

Best regards
Bernhard

Bernhard Schülke (bernhard001) wrote : [Gutsy] NEW Effect - corrupt graphics off with mga AGP450 Dualhead after upgrade - an idea

Now I have Gutsy Gibbon: No problem with the new kernel. This fault is solved i guess.

But:
===

1. I can only start Ubuntu in the safed mode with the 1280x1024 resolution. And:

2. No chance to get this resolution in the other modes (and the text-mode, trivial): In the x-client and the gnome mode i can´t use this resolution. I can work only in the vesa 800x600 mode. And the mga mil. AGP 450 Dualhead graphic card won´t acceppt.

I guess i have a suspicion. My computer has a motherboard with the intel 815 chipset and an onboard-graphic-unit which i normally ignore. This is a second graphic card, a vga card! In my opinion the x server is strangely confused by the second onboard-card, which i forgot, until the system normally tries to go in the vga mode and ignores my AGP graphic card.

I wished this information would help to solve the puzzle.

Best regards
Bernhard

I can run gutsy gibbon with the 2.6.22-14-generic kernel. But only in low graphic mode.

The original bug is "solved"; but there is a new bug to open...
