Bug Description

Cinnamon seems to have an unnecessary dependency on the Caribou on-screen keyboard.

Caribou ought to be a recommended or optional package. Not a hard dependency.

This bug was fixed in the package cinnamon - 1.6.7-2

---------------
cinnamon (1.6.7-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * new patch: network-user-connection.patch
    Set connections and passwords as user-owned, following matching changes
    in nm-applet and gnome-control-center. (Closes: #698571)
  * Remove caribou as dependency. (LP: #1106062)
  * Restrict libgudev-glib-dev and libnm-glib-dev build-dependencies to
    Linux platforms: should fix the build on FreeBSD and Hurd.

According to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2116217, this change broke Cinnamon for users who don't have cinnamon installed. I'm guessing you need to depend on gir1.2-caribou-1.0 like gnome-shell 3.2 does.

Changed in cinnamon (Ubuntu):
status: Fix Released → Triaged
importance: Undecided → High
summary: - Cinnamon depends on Caribou

Confirming this is an issue for me on a daily build of 13.04. Installing cinnamon through the Software Center leads to a "dead desktop" with just a wallpaper an no way to log out. Installing "caribou" through apt-get fixes the problem.
