Bug Description

On AMD64, with ATI free driver, when suspend or hibernate, there is a sort of crash. touching any key causes a full reboot losing all open applications.

This has never worked on any of the Ubuntu releases; I have previously reported a bug with edgy, but cannot find it with the new launchpad (which is slow and hard to use...)

Thanks for working on this, my disks are turning day and night!
GF

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. In your previous bug report I believe you mentioned screens full of junk. Would it be possible to take pictures of the those screens and add them to your bug report? Thanks in advance.

Hi!
I've done some experiments and found this in the /var/log/messages when I try to suspend and resume:

Jun 17 17:38:35 localhost kernel: [ 3264.215773] ohci1394 does not fully support suspend and resume yet

I've attached the entire file for your information.

I will now try a hibernate.

hibernate produced very similar results. I attach the /var/messages file after hibernate.

It looks like this is a serious problem on AMD64?

Anything else I can do?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug does not meet the criteria for a stable release update and is being marked as Won't Fix for this particular version of the kernel. You can learn more about the stable release update process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .
However, the issue that you reported is one that should be possible to test with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed kernel. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .
If you do decide to test with the development release of Ubuntu please comment on this bug report and include at least the minimal information requested at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Hello,

Thank you for taking my bug report so seriously.

I am currently downloading the Gutsy Tribe 5 desktop CD for AMD 64 and will
provide as much of the info that I can. However, I wonder how the error
logs will be available after a crash from a live CD?

The symptoms are that when the system tries to activate after
suspend/hibernate, then there is either a crash or a re-boot. In either of
these cases, the logs will be gone if running from a live CD, won't they?

Please do let me know if there is a way around this.

Cheers,
GF.

You are correct that the logs would not be available. However, reading https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend it seems that removing kernel modules can help one resume properly. Based off your previous investigations, if the system does not resume from suspend, try removing the ohci1394 driver before suspending and see if it will resume after that.

Hi!
I'm sorry for the delay in replying. Below is the status of my tests on Gusty tribe 5 Desktop CD for AMD64.

I boot from the CD, start the Desktop envt, then I try Suspend:
- system shuts down cleanly, i.e. disks stop and lights go out,
- keyboard seems to be dead, i.e. no key presses will wake the PC,
- mouse movement will NOT wake the PC,
- a mouse KEY PRESS will wake the PC cleanly! This is an improvement since all previous Ubuntu versions.

Then I try Hibernate:
- the pc displays a screen of error messages (see attached digital picture of screen),
- it then shuts down.
- keyboard seems to be dead, i.e. no key presses will wake the PC,
- mouse movement will NOT wake the PC,
- a mouse KEY PRESS will wake start a full reboot of the PC.

This is the best I could do!

As always, I continue to support Ubuntu and all free software movements in every way that I can. I have brought Ubuntu to many PC's...
Let me know if there's anything more I can do to help!
Cheers,
GF.
