Location bar menus include many submenus with selectable titles

Bug Description

The javascript menus currently used by Launchpad allows the user to activate/select a menu entry even if there are submenus available.
This goes against the common knowledge about menus, none of the toolkits for operating systems that I've used provide this option.

You'd have to chose between:
* Activation
* Sub menu

Yes, the green 'toplevel' menus, I am not aware of any other menus in launchpad.

Reopening bug (I agree that the current behaviour is counter-intuitive) and assigning to mpt. Matthew, please either close this bug or suggest an alternate presentation and get someone to work on it.

I'm not defending the behavior, but menus in Mac OS have long allowed this (for example, all the submenus in classic Mac OS's Apple menu, because they represented folders that could be opened as well as drilled down into). In some versions, these dual-behavior submenus had underlined titles to distinguish them from normal submenus.

For Launchpad, underlining probably would be too harsh, since it would apply to a majority of items, including *all* submenus in the current system. I don't have any other great ideas, except perhaps making all the menu items look a little like buttons. The Netscape-4-Bookmarks-menu-style solution would be to add an extra "No, here, really" item at the beginning of each submenu, instead of making the submenu title selectable, but that would be ugly.
