Does it happen when you manually run Variety or only when Variety starts during the startup of Ubuntu? Also, there is a delay of several seconds after Variety starts before it changes the wallpaper - I assume you have waited long enough and it still doesn't change?

When Variety starts during the startup of Ubuntu. I've waited several minutes and it doesn't change the wallpaper until the timed change (5 min).

Ok, please edit /home/peter/.config/autostart/variety.desktop and add "-v" option to the exec command. Then restart and wait for variety to start, and then some 30-40 seconds more - you should end up with a log file in ~/.config/variety/variety.log , please attach it here. Thanks.

I meant ~/.config/autostart/variety.desktop of course, not /home/peter...

When I can restart the session I'll attach the log at Ubuntu startup.

As far as I see this time it managed to change the wallpaper on start?
It is best if you can attach the log from some start when the bug happened and it didn't change the wallpaper automatically on start. So no need to restart now, but just have it in mind for the next time the bug happens. Thanks.

The problem of log is the absence of date and time.

Peter Levi (peterlevi) wrote :

You are correct, this needs time logging as well.

The order of changing the wallpapers in this file is this:

Fondos pantalla tios/052-1.jpg - this was the initial wallpaper
Fondos pantalla tios/5f2c22cb4a5380af7ca75622a6426917.jpg - maybe Variety tried to change to this at startup?
Fondos pantalla tios/052-1.jpg - not sure why it is reverting back, was this triggered manually by you or did Variety do this?
Fondos pantalla tios/ryanhothunk014.jpg - this is reported as a result of a "regular change", i.e. 5 minutes have passed.

By any chance do you remember which wallpaper you started with and with which one you ended up with? Are any of these changes above manual?

Also, is it possible that Variety is in fact changing the wallpaper at start, but this happens before Unity is fully initialized and shown, so you don't see the change itself, but see directly the final wallpaper? If you shutdown at one wallpaper and next time when you start you see another one, without seeing it change - this may be the case.

No, it hadn't any manual change.
Ok, I have added the next line to desktop autostart file: "X-GNOME-Autostart-Delay=10".
Perhaps in this way it'll work well.

It works well with "X-GNOME-Autostart-Delay=15"

Peter Levi (peterlevi) wrote :

Could you please try if the attached version fixes your problem without using X-GNOME-Autostart-Delay?
Here I have increased the delay after start before the first change to 20 seconds (it was 5).

I've added X-GNOME-Autostart-Delay=20 to the default autostart file, so this should in theory be fixed now.
