Bug Description

In gedit 3.9 (currently only in gedit git master) the file browser sidebar has a new toolbar. It looks wrong in Ambiance - see the attached screenshot. The upstream gedit developers pointed me to the following Adwaita commit, which we may need to merge into Ambiance for this to look right:

https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-themes-standard/commit/?id=a83cf6d6020534f165c2e8f29792007f8f8f01a0

3.8.2 is the latest stable release, it is unlikely that debian or ubuntu want to use an unstable version.

Lars has started work on that update and we are trying to get it ready in a ppa for extra testing, the current merge request is on https://code.launchpad.net/~larsu/gtk/3.10/+merge/194619

I'm copying some of the issues that have been listed during the first testing round here:

* the appmenu items are listed as unactive, Lars has a patch for indicator-appmenu on there:
https://code.launchpad.net/~larsu/indicator-appmenu/insert-action-groups-on-menus/+merge/194901

* upstream dropped "Desktop" from the fileselector locations ... which makes sense for them since they don't use on in gnome-shell, that's still something other desktops/OSes probably want though (it's also inconsistent with GTK2)

That's https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=711040

* the fileselector default geometry is a bit small (e.g the "open" dialog in gedit)

I've opened https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=712288 about that (basically it defaults to 626x494 for me on a 1920x1024 screen)

* the nautilus/gedit information bars have no background color after the update (e.g open a document in gedit and change it from outside, the bar asking if you want to reload ... or open the trash: location in nautilus)

That seems an Ubuntu theme issue

* the messaging menu actions (e.g "compose email) are unactive, that might be the same issue than the menus one

* The overlay-scrollbars orange bar (which indicates the current position of the scrollbar) is not visible

I've opened https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=712302 about the "placebar doesn't show Desktop" issue. Their change works for GNOME3 but for no other desktop or OS (Windows, macOS, Unity, XFCE, KDE all have a Desktop and still use it)

A small but annoying issue with 3.10 is in synaptic. Whenever marking a package for install from anywhere down in a scrollable list, after marking the package you're brought back to the top of the list

@Doug: not sure about that one, it seems like it could be a synaptic issue, you might want to open a bug about it?

Gnome removed & hard-coded toolbar style setting from gtk-3.10. Earlier it was possible to add

"gtk-icon-sizes = panel-menu-bar=16,16:panel-menu=16,16:gtk-large-toolbar=16,16:panel=8,8:gtk-button=16,16"

to ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.

But now, gtk-icon-sizes are completely ignored. This is a too drastic change to land on a LTS release. In other desktop-session like gnome-flashback/mate there is no way to change panel-menu/toolbar-menu sizes & icons.

I am using gtk+3.0 (3.10.7-0ubuntu1) & the regression still exists. Will Ubuntu patch it back?
