Gutsy(beta) install did not recognise other Linux distros on disk, ie they do not appear in GRUB

Bug Description

I installed Gutsy(beta) next to Feisty and some old /fat32 OS. i.e. other OSs on other partitions of the disk.
The resulting GRUB menu.list includes Gutsy and Windows but NOT Feisty.
I am pretty sure that Feisty's installer recognised a neighbouring linux distro (which was Edgy).

Reasons why this is important:

- feature regressions seems a bad thing
- it's really odd to have Ubuntu find the competition but not find partitions which it created itself!

There are some related bugs, e.g. #47229, but they look old.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Did you notice this when installing from the Live CD or the Alternate CD? Thanks in advance.

Hi. It was the Live CD, ie standard x86 one, 32 bit...
Thanks

Triaged to Confirmed. GRUB is not perfect. Ubiquity relies on GRUB to enumerate operating systems and it sometimes fails. There are many documented cases where GRUB gets confused. Work arounds involve editing menu.lst or grub.conf. It's not difficult but it's not easy for the new user either. Since this is an older submission, there may have been improvements to GRUB.

I'm afraid that TerryG's claim that Ubiquity relies on GRUB to enumerate other operating systems is entirely mistaken. It does not. It relies on GRUB to *boot* them, but detection is done via a completely separate component called os-prober.

Could you please attach /var/log/installer/syslog and /var/log/installer/partman to this bug, following the directions in http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingUbiquity/AttachingLogs? Thanks in advance.
