Do an alternate install of the version of Linux your running.

Robert,
Could you please run the installer again from a Konsole window using the --debug option (ubiquity --debug), and attach /var/log/syslog and /var/log/installer/debug. If you are using an older version of Ubuntu, attaching the files in /var/log/installer should suffice.
