I have been keeping my Gutsy up-to-date. However, Today dist-upgrade reported errors on packages:
 apport

 evolution-common
 gnome-panel-data
 gnome-panel
 synaptic
 update-manager

Here is the log of apt-get dist-upgrade:

The problem appears when the setting up procedure of packages trying to run gtk-update-icon-cache.
It can be solved by removing an image file

  sudo rm /usr/share/icons/hicolor/autopackage-installer.png

and run

apt-get upgrade

I had the same problem after upgrading from feisty.
Removing the given file solved it.

Seems like automatix did it again. I guess you have automatix or something similar enabled?

The broken png file is not shipped by Ubuntu, it comes from a third-party source.
