Bug Description

Sound card not working in 2.6.20-16 (from Feisty), but works with 2.6.17-10 from Edgy (on 2.6.17-10 i also had to put "options snd-hda-intel model=ref" in /proc/modprobe.d/alsa-base to make front speakers work).

What can i do to improve the status os this bug ? What's "incomplete status" means ?

In kernel 2.6.17-10 (from edgy installed in feisty)and "options model=ref" SB600 works like a charm. No way to make it to work in 2.6.20-16.

best regards

I tried alsa-driver-hg20070804 from here,

reboot and now it is working! :-) thanks alsa developers!

tip: untar, ./hgcompile & sudo make install

Saying "FIXABLE" when the "fix" is to recompile the bleeding edge of the entire sound subsystem, is a little misleading, IMO.

Someone needs to find the specific patch in current alsa that makes this work.

Thanks Eduardo, I did basically the same thing and now my sound works too( toshiba laptop with azalia sound card + ubuntu feisty 7.04 ).

I used alsa-driver-hg20070815.tar.bz2 and everything was fine.

@all: we need someone with this card to try to zero in on the specific change(s) that made it work on Gutsy/Feisty.

As already pointed out, simply installing the state-of-the-art of the whole ALSA makes it impossible to resolve for Feisty -- and, most probably, also on Gutsy (due to potential stability issues on the ALSA bleeding edge code, and the limited time we have until the release).

Although I understand the bliss one feels when finally the sound subsystem is, ah, sounding, this does not help us resolving this issue...

I tried the alsa drivers above, and the speakers are now working. The headphone jack, line-in jack, and internal mic still don't work. I am running an Inspiron 1521, with the SB600 Azalia soundcard.

My Inspiron 1521 SB600 Azalia was working perfectly (didn't check the mic, but headphones and speakers both worked) up until this morning's release of the security fix for the Feisty kernel; I installed that update and lost the sound device completely.

there was one other change I made, but it was made several days before: I installed the modem driver from Dell, and the driver set up an /etc/modprobe.d/hsf file that references the snd-hda-intel driver:

install /dev/ttySHSF /sbin/modprobe hsfpcibasic2; /sbin/modprobe hsfmc97ich; /sbin/modprobe hsfmc97via; /sbin/modprobe hsfmc97ali; /sbin/modprobe hsfmc97ati; /sbin/modprobe hsfmc97sis; [ -e /lib/modules/`uname -r`/extra/hsfusbcd2.ko ] && /sbin/modprobe hsfusbcd2; /sbin/modprobe snd_hda_intel; /bin/true

happy to report that alsa-driver-hg20070922.tar.bz2 works on my Dell D531 with SB600 Azalia. the only minor issue is my sound output slowly crawls to 100% sound, even after turning it down. If anyone knows how to fix this, please let me know (although just having sound is great!).

Hi, an easier way to get more current alsa than 1.0.14 are the backport modules.
At least for gutsy it should work to install the linux-backports-modules package and reboot once.
That way it starts working on an Inspiron 1521.
(Tested only with internal speakers and line-out though.)

Good luck!

It unfortunately appears that this bug is not yet resolved. Does this issue still exist in the Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS release? If so, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha2 is also scheduled for release today. It will appear at the following when available: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha2 . It contains the actively developed 2.6.26 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test this upcoming release via a LiveCD and verify if the issue still exists. If so, please include the appropriate debugging information as outlined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems . Thanks in advance.

I can confirm that there are still no sound in Intrepid Alpha6.

The installer doesn't give the default user access to the sound group (although that may be because it's not finding a working card?)

The card is showing up in lspci as above.

I downloaded (http://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/tiwai/snapshot/alsa-driver-20080921.tar.bz2) but it needs the dev environment installed (obviously...) and the net link I have here now is way too slow so I'll look into it later...d

I've subscribed to this bug if anyone wants me to try anything

Teresa,

I'm not sending you email (directly at least) -- you (or someone using
your email address) has subscribed to a bug on the ubuntu bug site.

There's nothing I can do about it, but you could go to the link in the
email and remove yourself from the list (there's an 'unsubscribe' link
on the right-top.)

The other option if that's too much effort is to setup a filter to
delete everything coming in from bugs.launchpad.net...

If all this fails, then perhaps an email to <email address hidden> or
maybe try <email address hidden> (not sure who reads those emails...)

Paul.
