Bug Description

Binary package hint: debian-installer

During installation of Ubuntu Gutsy tribe-3, the screen was distorted after installation of X.
First part of the installation the display looked fine, but after X installation the screen showed colored blocks instead of characters.
The installation could be completed, pressing enter to accept default choices where needed.
After reboot, X started correctly using Intel driver.

Installation type was alternate for AMD64.
System is a Compal IFL91 notebook with Intel GM965 chip-set (with on-board graphics).

I made a new installation, with Gutsy Tribe 4 (amd64 alternate CD).
The result was very similar to the above, only with tribe 4 the screen went black, instead of the colored blocks I got with tribe 3. I was able to complete the installation blindly, by simply pressing enter a few times. After reboot X again worked fine.

Today I did a new install of Gutsy tribe 4.
This time I used boot option vga=771 (added using F6). Now the display was not messed up!

The problem may be related to the fact xresprobe does not find any resolutions for my system:
albert@BTO:~$ xresprobe intel
id:
res:
freq:
disptype: lcd/lvds

xrandr finds:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 800, maximum 1280 x 1280
VGA disconnected (normal left inverted right)
LVDS connected 1280x800+0+0 (normal left inverted right) 331mm x 207mm
   1280x800 59.9*+ 60.0
   1280x768 60.0
   1024x768 60.0
   800x600 60.3
   640x480 59.9
TV disconnected (normal left inverted right)

I had the "colored blocks" blocks problem too on my laptop (Dell Latitude D830 with GM965),
the xresprobe intel output is the same as stated above.

X worked correctly after the installation.

Updated xresprobe dd. Aug 11: xresprobe_0.4.24ubuntu4_amd64.deb

xresprobe intel as normal user gives:
grep: /tmp/xprobe.24495/xorg.log: No such file or directory
id:
res:
freq:
disptype: lcd/lvds

sudo xresprobe intel gives:
id:
res: 1280x800
freq:
disptype: lcd/lvds

I couldn't retry the installation yet, as the daily CD for Aug 12 fails completely (bug 131981)

Tribe 5 gives colored blocks again, if installation is started without vga boot option.
After installation is completed, xresprobe gives same results as above.
After installation, xresprobe has version 0.4.24ubuntu4.

notebook is a ibm x40 - installation went fine till x is getting installed... very annoying! very annoying bug,
makes it completely impossible to install gutsy on imb x40 (41? 60? etc....)
