This looks like it may be an issue with the unity8 packages in universe.

Reviewing the files from your upgrade attempt you seem to have enabled the xorg-edgers-ppa. This will prevent the upgrade as that PPA contains different versions of packages essential to Ubuntu. The page, https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa, contains details on to how to revert to the official Xorg packages.

I purged the xorg-edgers ppa and am still having this issue.

I do not have unity-8 installed so that's not the problem here.

Could you add your /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log and /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log from the most recent attempt?

It's not just enough to disable the PPA, you must revert to the official xorg packages using ppa-purge. From your latest apt.log you still have the following packages installed:

xserver-xorg-video-intel [ i386 ] 2:2.99.911+git20140331.5c0623b5-0ubuntu0ricotz~saucy
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau [ i386 ] 1:1.0.10+git20140220.480f0998-0ubuntu0sarvatt~saucy
xserver-xorg-video-radeon [ i386 ] 1:7.3.99+git20140317.bdc41204-0ubuntu0sarvatt~saucy
on libglapi-mesa [ i386 ] 10.2.0~git20140331.ec4b8d16-0ubuntu0ricotz~saucy

I was able to upgrade in a haphazard way after deleting a large chunk of files implicated in dependencies. After
an unpleasant couple of days adding back what I inadvertently deleted, ubuntu 14.04 seems to be mostly working.
Thank you for the information about ppa-purge. I hope to avoid this next upgrade.
