Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

File / folder sorting in Nautilus ignores special characters ('_', '!', '~', etc.) and therefore does not obey ASCII sort order (http://www.ddms.com/resources/help/reportsmenu/ASCII_Sort_Order_Chart.htm).

Steps to reproduce: create three files: 'aaa', '_bbb' and '!ccc', view as list

Actual sort order:
aaa
_bbb
!ccc

Expected sort order:
!ccc
_bbb
aaa

This is upstream in the (perhaps sometimes overly) steady hands of Nautilus maintainers.

See:

Bug 547350 – Sort order problem in Nautilus
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=547350

Bug 458707 – Sort order ignores special characters
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=458707

Interestingly Gnome Commander gives me the "expected sort order"...

note that those GNOME bugs are closed, you should better take the discussion on the nautilus list or reopen the bug
