Bug Description

I thought, this thing would already have been suggested here, but I did not find anything about it.

When installing Ubuntu to a hard drive, it is default to write GRUB into MBR. No matter if the user explicitely chooses the MBR or it is automatically chosen - I think there should really be made a backup of the old MBR. I always took this for granted. Today I figured out, that there does not seem to be any backup (or maybe I just did not find it?).

Of course, it is clear that you should make a backup of it by yourself, if you still might need this MBR. Just as with any data that might be important. But there are many users out there who even would not know how to backup a MBR. So, I think Ubuntu should take care of this.

If I am wrong and Ubuntu creates a backup, then please forgive me. I searched more than half an hour for this and all I found were some forum entries from 2005 that stated that no backup is made.

I agree that grub-installer should do this, since grub doesn't take care of it itself.
