does using the plug and play model help you? it should provide the resoltuions of your panel, since reading the information from the monitor seems to work correctly.

yes, the plug and play modell helps as far as the resolution selection is affected; but actually testing the setting gives a very low resolution... and trying to configure dual-head doesn't seem to work at all; does displayconfig-gtk actually interoperate with the new xrandr-1.2 support in the gutsy ati driver?

Sorry, but the ati driver doesn't support xinerama anymore. So no dual head configuration. You have to wait until we get xrandr 1.2 support in displayconfig-gtk (won't happen before gutsy+1).

Does applying different resolution settings work?

jfyi, I don't use displayconfig-gtk anymore; and on hardy System->Preferences->ScreenResolution works more or less thanks to xrandr...

(except for strange devices that lack modeline information in their DDC reply, such as the panasonic PT-AX200)

oh, and one minor detail:
my samsung TFT offers the following modes:
and the preferences display coalesces the 60.0 and 59.9 setting into a single '60 Hz' setting choice...

Thank you for reporting this bug and for your efforts to make Ubuntu better. As Xorg has improved this past year, an unfortunate side effect of these improvements is that it has rendered several design assumptions in displayconfig-gtk obsolete. So, starting with Hardy we are no longer putting displayconfig-gtk forth as a primary configuration tool, and are putting our development focus into the Screen Resolution applet. As a result, we do not plan to fix this bug and thus are closing it.
