I see the following problems: can we use the trademarks? would not showing the trademarks in the frontend be ok? is there a way to retrieve the data automatically? who is going to volunteer for the mapping?

perhaps you should point mdke from the ubuntu-doc team to this page. perhaps it would be worth adding it to the documentation.

This is bug is not valid for the Ubuntu Software Store, because the mechanism has already been implemented. For example, if you search for "imovie" it will suggest Kino and Pitivi, even though neither of them mention iMovie in their descriptions.

Only half a dozen packages are tagged like this at the moment, but in the coming months we plan to introduce a system on Launchpad for contributors to tag more packages. We could not use either of the Web sites mentioned as data sources, unless the maintainers of those Web sites agreed to license their lists under the GPLv2 (the license of the rest of the app-install-data-ubuntu package).

that's good to know :)

a similar thing should happen when the user is right clicking on a file to find app to run his file.
are you planning tagging apps by what format they support ?

We don't plan to do anything like that in the Store itself, but you're welcome to propose that for Ubuntu in general. (I'm not sure what component would be in charge of that -- perhaps gvfs?)

i think this one need to be part of the Store,

right click on a file>software store will run the Store and in the search box the user will see the file format.

i found an old project that can help
http://sourceforge.net/projects/file-opener/

This is not a good idea.

If someone is looking for ichat or AIM, promoting an "ichat-like" program is hardly acceptable, especially when most of these programs try hard not to be like the counterparts. If someone needs a scanning program, one may simply search for "scan pdf" or similar.

Also not an idea and not every user was a Microsoft Windows user that comes to Ubuntu.
