Bug Description

Binary package hint: libc6

ANY reinstallation of lib-c6-even with the same version-causes an immediate crash and return to the login screen. If you "startx" from a shell, you get a "caught signal 11, x server aborting" error. Commenting out the "arabeyes" font referred to in another bug that gives the same symptoms has no effect in this case, but the trackback does refer to fonts, as in that case. Only GUI login is to terminal, which then has no borders or window controls without "metacity--replace&" > that gives the ability to open multiple terminals. You can launch GUI apps from terminal, but not the desktop itself.

This crash showed itself only after doing anything that involved a replacement or reinstallation of libc6(with ANY version). As long as I don't mess with libc6, the system works fine. I found this out after 4 experimental installations.

CLARIFICATION- The immediate crash is on every attempt to log in, NOT immediately on reinstallation of libc6! Things work OK until the next time you reboot-then you cannot log in except by "fail safe terminal" and the above symptoms result-every attempt at a GUI login instantly crashes and the login screen comes back up.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Kubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Not an issue in Tribe 5 or updating to released version. Have installed KDE, but not Kubuntu itself
