seems like a threading bug. the attached branch improves the situation and should fix this bug also.

as this is reported to error.u.c I am assuming is a crash of some sort on the indicator.. do we know what the impact to the user is?

 @vtuson the impact of an indicator bugs are:

1) if the indicator is visible on the screen, it will go empty and repopulate itself as nothing happened
2) there might be a slight performance hit for a while if apport kicks in and consumes all of the CPU
