Not obvious session is "live" from CD

Bug Description

I've had this response to the liveCD many times:
People put CD in
See "Start or Install Ubuntu"
And think they have installed it when really they are in the live session.

Please make it more obvious that you are in a live session. Currently, the only difference is that there is an "Install" Icon. Perhaps as simple as using a different background image for the liveCD.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Starting with at least Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 5 in the Gnome desktop environment it says "Live session user" on the gnome panel. Do you think this makes it obvious enough? Thanks in advance.

That sounds much better. However before I close the bug, I'd prefer to try it out on a random user.

I don't think this is enough, There are 3 things needed to really fix this bug.
1) Change "Start or Install Ubuntu" to something else, Perhaps "Start Ubuntu (then Install)"
2) Make it discoverable what a LiveCD is. Perhaps by clicking on Live Session User?
3) Some way to inform them they are saving files to a LiveCD and that they will NOT be saved.

We now (in Hardy) have two CD boot menu options:

  * Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer
  * Install Ubuntu

How does this feel?

I'd like to avoid having to explain what a live CD is if possible; the "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer" language seems more natural to me and avoids having to introduce jargon.

So these are actually 2 matters:
- the boot menu, for which i like Colin Watson's idea above
- Reminding people (not necessarily the same person) that data is not saved on harddrive and will be gone on shutdown/reboot unless actively saved on-line, via USB, etc.

Also you might want to add a "stick in a USB now if you want to use that as home directory" in the boot menu

USB is a little more involved; you need to prepare the stick in a special way. I don't think there's room to squeeze this into the boot menu.

I'll ask for ideas on ubuntu-devel on making it clear what's going on with regard to data.

Perhaps we could have a note on the wallpaper saying:

"Please note: Ubuntu is not yet installed on your computer, and any changes made here will be lost upon reboot. To install Ubuntu, double-click on the "Install" icon."

Please discuss the possibilities on the ubuntu-devel thread I started ("Subject: Data retention reminder on live CD").

I responded there, but it said my comment is being held for moderation.

Just to correct the previous note (somehow my email didn't get through), it should be this:

"Please note: Ubuntu is not yet installed on your computer, thus any changes made here will be lost upon reboot. To install Ubuntu, double-click on the "Install" icon."

That's more clear :)

I think the already made changes *might* be enough.
As long as it will stop you from doing anything that needs a reboot (nvidia driver, etc) and tells you that it can't because it's a liveCD.
Does it do that last part?

I don't think that's done, but it probably needs to be a separate bug against jockey.
