Bug Description

Compiz fusion crashes after activating cube effect. It's doing so after last update

I have a very similar problem since I installed 8.04 64bit. If there are any programs open on the desktop it will crash as soon as I press the buttons that activate the cube <ctrl><atl><button1> or <button1><button2>, the desktop crashes without the cube ever becoming visible. If there are no windows displayed on the desktop, either none open, or minimized, the rotate cube function works perfectly.

I am running 8.04, all current updates, on a System76 Darter Ultra (aka Daru1, aka white Darter).

Further experimentation, and help from the ubuntuforums led me to a work around.

Disable 3D effects plugin in ccsm and the rotating cube no longer crashes when apps are open. Would like to be able to have 3D and work with opened apps on the desktop, but this partially solves it for now.

Same problem for me. Ubuntu 8.04 64bit
Cube works only if "3D Windows" option is NOT selected! Otherwise it crashs!
I'd like to correct this bug, but...how?

Precisely I think the Server X crashs. In fact, after few seconds ubuntu go to graphic login window, like when I start up ubuntu!

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 RC or later?

Have not tried 8.10 yet.  Just got home from 22 days on the road.  Will try as soon as I get a chance.

Confirmed here as well.  Only doing it on the Daru1 System76 laptop though, not the desktop machine - there it works fine.

I had this problem as well using 64-bit Ubuntu on a desktop using an ASUS P5KPL-CM board (Intel GMA3100 integrated graphics). Regarding the state of affairs on Intrepid, there are no problems if the 'cube deformation' is set to either cylinder or sphere; 3D windows work fine. But if you try to use 3D windows without deformation, the same problem is still there.
