Bug Description

E1000 driver provided on ltsp chroot environment is not recognizing 82562V-2 (8086:10c0) device; I have built an ltsp server on feisty and have followed the esteps provided on Ubuntu wiki: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPQuickInstall?highlight=%28ltsp%29; these have worked just fine with other clients (with other NIC models); during client boot with 82562V-2 card pxe grabn the ip and load load the kernel; the process goes ok until the NIC configuration step where panics due to no interfaces available. Errors on client console:

Loading, please wait...
ipconfig: eth0: SIOCGIFINDEX: No such device
ipconfig: no devices to configure
/init: .: 1: Can't open /tmp/net-eth0.conf
[ 27.323320] Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
[ 27.323375]

I have booted the problematic client with feisty live cd and have found that the NIC is not recognized either; I have compiled and installed the driver provided by Intel directly on the live-cd booted system and proved that work fine.

Well, the driver isn't in the base Ubuntu kernel, and we use that, so as soon as this driver's supported in the base Ubuntu kernel, then we'll pick it up. In the meantime, if you compiled the kernel "the ubuntu way" and actually created a dpkg for it, I see no reason why you can't do an install of the custom kernel dpkg in the chroot, and an ltsp-update-kernels.

Hi Scott, thanks for your reply... I was wondering how to compile that
driver in the ltsp chroot, but I've found that the ltsp chroot kernel
version is different (lower) than the server's, so I'm not sure how to do
it... I have already tried with just chroot into the ltsp image and make the
driver, but certainly it dind't worked (besides the difference between
kernel versions and that I have not created a dpkg for it - doesn't know how
to do it - )... In the tests that I've done with the live cd, I've manually
copied the compiled driver into
/lib/modules/2.6.20-16-generic/kernel/drivers/net/e1000 and the modprobe the
module, but I wonder I'm missing something to get the driver included in the
kernel.

Can you please help me with some more information about compile the kernel
in the "ubuntu way" or in did, how to add that driver to the ltsp kernel
image? or at least point me to some where I can get more help...

Once again, thank you...
// Mauricio.

I have built the driver into the LTSP chroot and updated the initramfs; the driver is included, but it's an old version, so does not include support for the card referenced. Even tough the bug for me is confirmed I'm not sure if will be confirmed for LTSP on Ubuntu Feisty. Have updated a post that I've made with the solution:

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 RC or later?

Daniel... I don't know, since I´m still at 7.1; have not upgraded to 8.04
but I´ll probably give a shoot with 8.10 and let you know; are you
evaluating? or hitting this?--

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

I'm closing this bug for a couple of reasons:

- The typical response time for a request for more information has long passed

but more importantly,

- This device has been supported in the kernel since 2.6.24, which is used in 8.04. Everything 7.10 and earlier is past end-of-life. Any supported version of ubuntu should not have this problem.

Please reopen it if you are still having this problem, and don't hesitate to submit bug reports in the future. To reopen the bug report you can click on the current status, under the Status column, and change the Status back to "New". Thanks for reporting the bug!
