Bug Description

Hello. The network configuration tools are GREAT, thanks
for working in them! That being said, I have a bug to report.
Starting with network settings open, and an
interface (any interface) set to DHCP, and with
the "DNS Servers" and "Search Domains" boxes empty
in the DNS tab. When I activate the interface, and
aquire an address from dhcp /etc/resolv.conf is written
correctly. When I click OK to close network settings,
the contents of /etc/resolv.conf are replaced with
whatever is in the DNS tab (in this case nothing).
This is highly counter intuitive, DNS settings should
be taken from the environment whenever possible. It should
not be necessary to manually specify the search domain, and
dns server when changing networks, especially when DHCP is
handing the information out.

do you use warty or hoary ?

I've opened a bug upstream about that:

This was using Hoary (and fully up to date).

I'm not sure if this is the same bug or different. I was installing ubuntu for the first time (hoary) and after
configuring PPP via the gnome network tool, I had no /etc/resolv.conf at all (I had left DNS blank when setting up
PPP, expecting it to get configured when PPP connected).

I spent some time trying to work out how, without a network, I was supposed to work out a DNS server. Anyway, I
eventually resolved it by running wvdial which reports the DNS server on connect and then entering these values
into the button fields.

So, it looks like the network config tool didn't parse the DNS values returned on PPP connect to configure DNS.

I'm rejecting this bug because:
1) It is reported on releases of Ubuntu that are no longer supported
2) There has been no activity in Ubuntu or upstream for over two years
3) The default network connection system has changed significantly since the bug was reported.

Please reopen this bug if I am in error. Thank you.

i have similar behaviour.

i am connected via cable with dhcp. now i change to a manual dns, but a few minutes later, dns is set to default dns (i think is dchp dns).

so, every few minutes (about 5) dns "reset" to the default and i have to change it again. even if i do it manualy (by changing /etc/resolv.conf) it changes anyway.

i'm using feisty and i have all updates available installed.
