Bug Description

[Impact]
Due to VirtualBox #13820 [1], Linux hosts running on Broadwell CPUs are unable to start VirtualBox VMs.

[Test Case]
Launching a VM hangs at 0%, and logs dmesg output like this:

[ 6204.331045] BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at 00007f6f95a043e0

This issue was reportedly fixed in version 4.3.22.

Given that this bug makes VirtualBox entirely unusable on affected machines, this seems like a plausible candidate for an SRU release.

[Regression Potential]
*None known, this patch is already part of vivid.

I guess this is a problem for kernel >=3.7, right?

@LocutusOfBorg, thanks, but why did you rename one of the patches in the trusty SRU, that seems uneeded change and makes the diff less easy to read...

Could you add the SRU info to the bug? (impact, testcase, regression potential)

Hello Andy, or anyone else affected,

Accepted virtualbox into trusty-proposed. The package will build now and be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox/4.3.10-dfsg-1ubuntu4 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance!

Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot (crichton) wrote : [virtualbox/utopic] possible regression found

As a part of the Stable Release Updates quality process a search for Launchpad bug reports using the version of virtualbox from utopic-proposed was performed and bug 1444751 was found. Please investigate this bug report to ensure that a regression will not be created by this SRU. In the event that this is not a regression remove the "verification-failed" tag from this bug report and tag 1444751 "bot-stop-nagging". Thanks!

We are going to use this patch also in debian jessie.
I don't have any regression with it, unfortunately I probably don't have the right CPU

Hi folks,

Apologies for the long delay here. The packages built with that patch do appear to fix the problem. Many thanks!
