Bug Description

I have UDF formatted DVD+RW in the LG DVD+/-R,RW, DVD-RAM, CD-RW/R.

When I try to open k3b from terminal as root, k3b locked up my whole system.

Mouse was stucked, no keyboard respose, not even Ctrl-Alt-F1, F2, F6 or F7, nor
Ctrl-Alt-Bkspc

I had to press reset button.

Can I repeat the problem? Yes, exact behaviour. k3b locked up when the logo was
shown.

My system is P4, 2.8GHz, 1GB RAM, Ubuntu Hoary Array CD 7, updated to the latest.

I prepared the UDF DVD+RW using mkudffs

And I can even copy some files to the DVD+RW using nautilus normal copy and paste.

I cannot reproduce the problem here. Did you use any specific option with mkudffs?
The only thing i notices is an extremely slow access to the DVD when running
k3bsetup
but that's due to k3b using his own scsi layer emulation/access.

Can I get an update on this bug, atleast in regards to it affecting breezy? Maybe try to Live CD and see if
that has a problem?

Thanks

I've recently bought some DVD-RAMs (they are difficult to get where I live) and was anxious to try backuping to them. Unfortunately, starting udftools hard-locked up my machine, reproducibly. This happened about three weeks ago, on current feisty. I'm currently battling with some other bugs, but I'll be able to test and diagnose it a bit more in a couple of days, maybe on monday.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this linux-source-2.6.15 kernel bug to the new "linux" package. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Also, if you would be interested in testing the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release, it is available at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Please let us know your results. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

The same appear to happend with my LG HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR-H30N on my MEDION MS-7358 Motherboard. The complete system freezes and nothing else can be performed.

It happends:

- During the installation process, when setup analyses the drives.

- With the operating system installed, when trying to read a disc. By the way, I could install Ubuntu only by using a diferent reader.

But it doesn't happend when:

- Reading from the live-cd.

Alberto, it seems you have different hardware than the original bug reporter. It would be best to open a new bug report to track your particular issue. Even though you may be experiencing the same symptoms, they typically are hardware specific. You should also mention which release you tested with (ie it should be preferably be Karmic 9.10).

Having not heard back from the original bug reporter for quite some time, I'm closing this bug for now. Thanks.
