Screens and Graphics doesn't start, reporting a crash of that program. Running under Parallels 5584, the default resolution (1152x720?) works, but changing it garbles the display. Under the "screen resolution" preference, the resolution is set to "off". Trying to reconfigure the xserver results in the "FATAL: Error inserting battery" error.

My system is the generic Ubuntu configuration for my version of Parallels, running Hardy A6 with all updates applied at the time of this post.

Running Hardy, all updates. I just experienced this crash not too long after uninstalling fglrx and installing the open source driver using an ATI 1300X pro card and TV out for my monitor. I was fiddling with the Screen and Graphics app to change the screen resolution. TV out is currently broken, likely related to this crash (using VNC to access the system). Everything worked for a day after I switched to the open source driver.

I fixed this by deleting the /etc/X11/xorg.conf as suggested above (actually, I renamed it with 'sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.broken', although all of the xorg.conf backups were deleted after restarting). This allowed me to use the displayconfig-gtk, which I neglected to mention wouldn't start before deleting the file. After the system restarted, my video card driver and screen resolution were set to an incorrect, unusable setting, but after correcting these settings I have the display back on my TV.

Thank you for reporting this bug and for your efforts to make Ubuntu better. As Xorg has improved this past year, an unfortunate side effect of these improvements is that it has rendered several design assumptions in displayconfig-gtk obsolete. So, starting with Hardy we are no longer putting displayconfig-gtk forth as a primary configuration tool, and are putting our development focus into the Screen Resolution applet. As a result, we do not plan to fix this bug and thus are closing it.

For more background on this change, please see this page: [WWW] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/DisplayConfigGtk

So can you then make the screen resolution applet work when there is no local monitor? Or should I report that as a bug too? The only reason I tried the old "screens and graphics" thing is because the SR applet has all choices greyed out when there is no local monitor. So I still have no way to adjust my screen size while working over VNC.

Thanks,
Brad
