OpenOffice.org Calc crashes with certain .xls/.csv files, Draw does not open at all (Ubuntu 7.10 beta)

Bug Description

When opening certain .xls/.csv files (namely the StatCounter logs), Calc crashes (hangs and turns dark). Also, when trying to open OO Draw, it falls into a perpetual attempt to perform document recovery (even when there is no document to be recovered) of a document called "Untitled 1", and clicking Cancel will end up opening OO Writer instead. No idea what's going on. Not sure if this is a OO 2.3 error or a problem with Gutsy beta (because in Feisty I was running OO 2.2 and it was working fine).

Calc appears to hang with any CSV file on my system. I created a CSV file containing a single line as follows:

"one", "two", "three"

When I attempted to open it, Calc hung and I had to force it to quit.

Some more interesting behavior occurred when I attempted to open an empty CSV file. In this case, Calc first put up the "Filter Selection" dialog. When I selected "Text CSV" and clicked "OK", Calc hung as before. The interesting part is that when I looked at the empty file it was full of binary data. The "file" utility reports it to be a "Microsoft Office Document".

Does this problem still affect you with the final version of Ubuntu 7.10.

I was unable to reproduce the problem with the simple test case you mentioned of

"one", "two", "three"

which loads fine for me.

Thanks,

Chris Cheney

Also oodraw runs fine for me as well.

Which version of Ubuntu 7.10 are you running on (eg amd64/i386)?

Daniel,

Does this happen for you on any size csv file? I made a simple csv file to test with and it did not crash for me. Could you attach one that does crash for you to the bug report for bug #148562?

Thanks,

Chris Cheney

Dear Chris,

Attached is the simplest of the three small test files I created. All failed under gutsy (but worked fine a week ago under feisty). I thought perhaps the failure was due to odd handling of the quotation marks -- but it didn't matter whether there were quotes or not.

In desperation I completely uninstalled and reinstalled openoffice, dumped the .openoffice directory in my home directory ... It still fails. Knowing that this is not easily replicated by others doesn't fill me with hope.

As an after thought I opened Calc, created a small file of two lines and tried to save it as a csv. It came up with the warning that if you save it in another format you may lose bits. I clicked <Yes> and openoffice has now hung.

Thanks,

Daniel

Dear Chris,

This bug is not a global problem.

I have played around using the liveCD -- no problems; and I have played around using another account -- no problems.

Something must have got screwed up in the local settings. If you have any thoughts, I would appreciate it, otherwise I will just create a new account.

Thanks

Daniel

You can try deleting your ~/.openoffice.org2/ folder (make backup first) to see if the problem goes awy. This seems related to bug 158609

Which gtk theme are you using and does the problem still occur if you use the Human theme?

Thanks for the advice and help. I did try deleting ~/.openoffice.org2/ but
it didn't solve the problem.

I don't know if the problem was with the themes ... I had already deleted
the account. All works well now :) Clearly it is a problem individual users
can create.

I am trying to open .csv files on my system as well and I get the same crashes and the same dark screen - whereas I can open the files with MS Excel on the same system - the files appear to be ok - Calc appears to be having the problem. any help greatly appreciated.
