Bug Description

I'm trying to boot my compaq presario V3417LA from the gutsy live CD, but it hangs during boot. It hangs after around 30 seconds, requiring a hard reset. I can get a stable system when I boot it with acpi=off.

I checked the CD for defects, also I checked that the bios is up-to-date.

This laptop handles the feisty live CD just fine, so this is a regression in gutsy.

This laptop has NVIDIA nForce C51 chipset, Broadcom Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN, NVIDIA GeForce Go6150 and an AMD Sempron Mobile processor. lspci etc. are posted below.

Actually some of the device codes from my lspci are very similar to the ones in of bug #144030 . I don't know how important that is.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description does not yet have enough information.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available at [WWW] http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies. Thanks in advance!

I just tried booting with acpi=off, and indeed with that I manage to boot the live CD. I'll post the requested logs in a minute.

Just a note: the problem persists on the gutsy release candidate (not that I expected it to be fixed so soon already)

I think this bug should be rated "high", at least if I interpret this correctly: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance

This bug both is "A problem with an essential hardware component (disk controller, laptop built-in wireless, video card, keyboard, mouse)" and "Has a severe impact on a small portion of Ubuntu users (estimated)"

Small note: this bug persists on the gutsy final release.

Plus, I double checked that my BIOS is up-to-date. It is, I have version F.34, also the latest version provided on the compaq website.

Ok, me again, done it, installed with "almost" without problems:

-> Usb mouse gets disabled after a while
-> If i try to switch to a tty (CTRL ALT + F1 for example) it hangs...
   -> Got no Sound

Im going to drive on internet for a while... if i cant find anything ill try the 64 bits version.... (Im working with feisty atm)

OK, here are my outputs, commands used:

sudo lspci -vvnn
sudo dmesg
sudo uname -a

if you need any other information please let me know...

By the way, i consider this bug should be rated as hig, 'cause there are many cases as you can see, and as far as i can guess... almost all the V3000 series have the same problems (Same with the HP version of this series)

Hi:

I'm trying to install Gutsy on my laptop, AMD Sempron 3500, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB hd, Video adapter NVIDIA GeForce Go 6100. Currently I'm running Windows Vista (it came with the pc) and working just fine. When I try to boot from the live cd I get a Bios Bug #81 and then it freezes when trying to boot. I tried to check the cd for errors but got the same problem. Somebody suggested to try the alternate installation, but I don't think that's gonna solve the problem. In the meantime, how do I boot with apci=off? Thanks.

Hi:

I tried to boot the live cd with the option apci=off but it still hanged a little further, when opening a new session. I couldn't see anything on the screen but I heard the first notes of the Ubuntu theme over and over. I also got a message saying that my pnp bios was causing a problem and suggesting I download an update from my vendor, I'll try that. In the meantime I tried the alternate cd with the option acpi=off and it worked, though I didn't complete the installation. I wonder if once installed it'll work...

HI, I believe this problem is not in Ubuntu, but in a common part of most of all recent dist (kernel?). I had feisty 32 bits installed in my HP Pavilion dv6215us, AMD Turion 64, and it worked fine. Now I decide to try other dists (just for fun) and had similar problems in Fedora 8, Mandriva 2008 and Opensuse 10.3, as also in Gutsy (all 32 bits). Searching internet, its possible to find users from these distos reporting boot problems like "in previous version I could, but now I cant...". That`s why I believe the problem is not in Ubuntu... Is it possible to track kernel modifications from previous versions?

Yeah, also tried other distros with no luck. Common factor: Kernel 2.6.22.
Tried some 'oldies' with 2.6.20 and the DO work.

Any version newer than 2.6.20 including 2.6.23 fails with same error.
I tried Mandriva 2008, Gentoo 2007.0 and fails equaly.
Also i tried Ubuntu Gutsy 64 bits, and works fine, with ACPI working 100%.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
