Bug Description

The current unetbootin version from the developer's PPA is 613-1 uploaded 2015-07-20

I have tested and it works for me, also between the newest versions of Ubuntu.

See the following list of versions of unetbootin in the Ubuntu universe repo

Ubuntu-version; Unetbootin-version
_____________________________________________________________________________

12.04.5 LTS; 565-3 probably uploaded 2012
14.04.2 LTS; 585-2 probably uploaded 2013
14.04.3 LTS; 585-2 probably uploaded 2013
15.04______; 608-1 probably uploaded before the 'gfxboot.c32: not a
  COM32R image' bugfix
15.10______; 608-1 probably uploaded before the 'gfxboot.c32: not a
  COM32R image' bugfix
_____________________________________________________________________________

This will make users who do not understand to add the developer's PPA use an old version, which is likely to suffer from some bugs, for example the 'gfxboot.c32: not a COM32R image' bug.

Please update unetbootin in the repos :-)

Unetbootin is in universe now. Do you mean that it should be moved to main? That might be a good idea, if it helps keeping it up to date :-)

Who can move a program package from one repository to another one?

Do you need more information?

I have already described the bug in the opening comment. I can add that it is important to upgrade Unetbootin to the current version (to what is uploaded to the developer's PPA). Otherwise the version that a regular user installs is likely to fail to install newer versions of Ubuntu (particularly the newest version). And Unetbootin is typically used to install a newer version of Ubuntu into a USB pendrive for testing and installing.

The problems arise when the boot configuration for the live session is changed from one version to the next version, and the problems correspond to some of the problems of the Ubuntu Startup Disk Creator. Unetbootin's developer can usually fix the problems soon after they are discovered, but someone most port the current version to the Ubuntu repos for all the supported versions of Ubuntu.

This bug report does not suggest to develop Unetbootin beyond the developer's version.

@ sudodus

I think Unetbootin would be moved to main if Ubuntu makes it its default boot disk creator, so in that case the importance of this bug would be "Critical".

The information about how you can make Unetbootin to be upgraded in a stable Ubuntu release is here:
<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates/MicroReleaseExceptions>

Also other thing that would be interesting Unetbootin to have is their databases about which releases are out there put into a different package, as databases are candidates for upgrade on stable releases:
<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/One%20Hundred%20Papercuts/Triage/Classify%20as%20a%20stable%20release%20update>

I'm unsubscribing now. If you have further questions, please ask them in <email address hidden>, as they will know better than me. On the other hand, if Unetbooting is included in the Main repository, please subscribe me back to this report.

Thank you πŸ˜‰

Current version in Zesty is 608 from 2014, while the latest one is 625 from May of 2016.
Old version also contains old dependencies like gksu, which no other apps are using.
