Gutsy display utility prevents xorg from starting

Bug Description

After installing ubuntu 7.10, instead of using the new GUI interface for editing the xorg file, I edited it myself in gedit. I added the correct refresh rates for my monitor that ubuntu didn't detect correctly. Upon reboot, before gnome loads, the display manager appears with default settings. Regardless of the settings chosen, clicking okay, cancel, or the X button causes xorg to reload with the display manager screen again. I installed 7.10 again and the same problem occured.

I can confirm I'm having the same issue on my machine with Gutsy Kubuntu. X display settings are not saved, but revert to the default instead of staying at the 1600x1200 I've set through the GUI.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that this is an older issue; is it still happening in the latest release 8.04 Hardy? If so, set the bug status to 'new' and leave a comment to signify that it is ready for triage / review. Otherwise if the issue has been fixed, please set the status to 'invalid'.

The original bug report seems invalid, since it only goes to the bulletproof-x mode if you've invalidated your xorg.conf as seems the case. Closing the bug.
