Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

Summary: Attempted to connect to my work's VPN. They provide login username, password and an IP address. Added those to the wizard and left the other options as defaults. An error 'VPN Connection failed occurs when attempting to connect

Steps
1. Create a VPN Connection using the supplied IP address
2. Connect to the VPN with the supplied username and password

Expected Results: It should successfully connect to the VPN

Actual Results: The VPN does not successfully connect. See attached image.

Also the VPN is a pptp tunnel. When the same IP address and login username and password is attempt in Windows, the connection is successful

The following options were enabled and the connection worked

Require Microsoft Point-to-Point Encryption (MPPE)
Refuse 128-bit Encryption
Refuse Stateless Encryption
Refuse to Authenticate with EAP

The only remaining issues are firstly whether the connection error message could have been more descriptive and also whether these options should be enabled by default if they are commonly enabled by default on pptp vpn servers.

This could be common based on the anecdotal evidence since the workaround was found on a random blog (http://paraviya.blogspot.com/2007/10/vpn-to-pptp-network-from-ubuntu-feisty.html). Between my experience and the blogger's it could be a common scenario for pptp vpns.

please say what vpn you are using. also please reproduce and attach your complete /var/log/syslog afterwards.

Also do gconftool-2 -R /system/networking > /tmp/gconf.txt

and attach that gconf.txt file.

I have the same issue. I use "PPTP VPN Connection Manager". Can't get IP from DHCP. Works once (1). Then stops working after reboot. Use Ipredator service.

After doing some reading this problem occurs especially frequent when using wireless devices.

My syslog says:

LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Jul 4 12:15:43 andromeda pppd[4874]: Connection terminated.
Jul 4 12:15:43 andromeda NetworkManager: <info> VPN plugin failed: 1

Read http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/howto-diagnosis.phtml#lcp_timeout

Here my knowledge ends.

This is really annoying. Can't use ipredator service with UTMS.

I think this report is currently described in a general way and we need to narrow down the description.

Does the problem only appear when one is trying to use their PPTP (compared to VPNC, OpenVPN) account?

I had tried quite a few different options and I managed to get PPTP VPN working.
I think the issue was that EAP (in Authentication methods) was enabled.

Could someone try, with their vanilla system, that simply by disabling the EAP authentication method, they are able to connect to their PPTP VPN using NetworkManager (no other configuration hacks) in Ubuntu 9.04?

Thank you for taking the time to report this by then helping to make Ubuntu better. I can see from the duplicate bug report that this is still an issue in Jaunty, therefore I am marking this as confirmed.
