poor battery life in gutsy

This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. When I ran Feisty, I had 4.5 hours of battery life. After upgrading to Gutsy, I get less than 2.5 hours of battery life.

I am running a ThinkPad Z60m.

I can confirm this issue.
Battery life is significantly reduced in Gutsy when comparing with other operating systems, such as Windows XP. In my case I can get 5 hours of work on my battery using Windows and 3,5 hours on Gutsy. This prevents me from using Gutsy when running on battery power.
I don't understand why this bug does not get more recognition from the community.

The "Useful Patches" section below describes more:

Thomas Gleixner High Resolution Timers (hrt) patchset brings many improvements, like the cpuidle work and Udo A. Steinberg and Venki Pallipadi "force enable HPET" patches (non HPET timers causes about 20-40 CPU wakeups/second, but HPET is often hidden by the BIOS due to Windows XP deficiencies). Those are fully merged in 2.6.24-rc1 vanilla kernel. See http://www.tglx.de/projects/hrtimers/

Kristen Carlson Accardi from Intel has a patchset to turn on "Aggressive Link Power Management" (ALPM) for the AHCI driver (for SATA bus). Also from Accardi, SATA Asynchronous Notification (SATA AN), alows SATA link to notify media insertions (thus avoid hal polling the cdrom). Those patches were merged in 2.6.24-rc2 kernel. The HDAPS disk protection systems can reduce battery life. Matthew Garrett provides a patch that prevents hdaps kernel module to generate interrupts when this feature isn't used.

FYI, I am having the same problem on Hardy.

I am attaching the power manager debugging log.

This bug is still an issue for Hardy.

What other information do you need for this bug to keep it from expiring?

None.  As far as I'm concerned, expire it.  I appreciate your contact and interest.

But this is still a bug.

cd insert notification still relies on hal drive polling in Hardy -- is this part of the bug? isn't this feature supposed to be implemented?

This is not an GPM bug. GPM just read the information about the battery life from the kernel or acpi, etc, if you run powertop and discover an app using a lot of cpu cycles or wake ups you should fill a bug to that application not to the app who show how much battery you currently have, feel free to do that, closing this report. thanks.
