Bug Description

ZFS errors can go undetected by normally diligent users because it's new and werid and not part of any scheme we have for reporting errors like we do with SMART. When a disk is taken out of a ZFS pool for ZFS-internal criteria, nothing in the normal utilities that are installed will let a user know.

The ZFS event daemon will poll ZFS state and report errors to the root email address. (It's not as good as reporting errors into the GUI, but that's a feature and bug report for the Z-E-D. At least the admin user will get local email in the case of problems.)

The zfsutils-linux should Recommend zfs-zed.

Hi Chad, thanks for spotting that. I've uploaded the fix into ppa:colin-king/zfs-0.6.5.4-alpha - it's currently building but should be ready in a short while to test.

If you can verify it does as expected, then I can get it uploaded into xenial

Thanks

Related to this, zfs-zed should email root by default, and I'm thinking it does not do so currently.

I had been working on addressing this. I finally made time to finish my changes, which have been rebased on top of your (colin-king's) PPA. With these changes, zed works out-of-the-box, has all non-debugging scripts enabled, and emails root by default (just like mdadm has for years).

The upstream scripts expect zed-functions.sh in /etc/zfs/zed.d. I've installed to to /usr/lib and symlinked it instead. I don't think we really want that to be a conffile edited by users.

The attachment "zfs-linux.zed.debdiff.2" seems to be a debdiff. The ubuntu-sponsors team has been subscribed to the bug report so that they can review and hopefully sponsor the debdiff. If the attachment isn't a patch, please remove the "patch" flag from the attachment, remove the "patch" tag, and if you are member of the ~ubuntu-sponsors, unsubscribe the team.

Colin, recommending zfs-zed is not, by itself, sufficient to email root as this bug report asked for. The debdiff I attached would accomplish this. Are you rejecting my changes, do you want them in a separate bug report, or something else?

Ugh, I omitted that. I can't see how I made that mistake. I'll get that resolved tomorrow.

The changelog says this:
Make zed work out-of-the box (LP: #1542276)

That's the wrong bug number.
