Ubuntu bug supervisors notified via email about other distributions

Bug Description

Package bug contacts for Ubuntu get e-mail about other distributions. If I have signed up to be a bug contact for Ubuntu, I should not be forced to get mail about other distributions. I didn't sign up to be bug contact for Baltix.

As an example, I'm on the Ubuntu Server team and so I get mysql bugmail. Today I got a notification that a Baltix task had been opened in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/137724. This is irrelevant to me and outside the scope of what I'm signed up for. As the bug mail says:

You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu
Server Team, which is a bug contact for mysql-dfsg-5.0 in ubuntu.

Not in Baltix. I get enough bugmail about Ubuntu. This is an annoyance for me, but is, I believe, a significant limitation in the scalability of the current Launchpad design. Extra bugmail for one distribution isn't horrible, but add enough distros in and it just doesn't scale.

Launchpad's design builds upon that a bug is a shared resource. It's very hard to determine what's interesting for people. What's uninteresting for you, might be very interesting for someone else. For example, if someone fixed the bug in some other distribution, there are people that are interested in seeing what the fix was.

I recognize that, but can't there at least be an option? It seems
Launchpad's aim is to drown me in what (to me) is irrelevant information.

If I have to control it myself, I can only do it by being subscribed to
fewer packages and how does that help?

Even an option would be very much work, for not that much benefit. There
is something we could do, though. We could add a header to the e-mail
notification, indicating which targets the notification is about.
For comments that would include all the bug's contexts, but for status
changes, and bug tasks additions, only the bug task target would be
listed. That way you could do the filtering on your side.

How does that sound?

That would be progress and a think would suit as an interim step. In the
long run, I still think the current model has a scalability problem.

Instead of the handful (and AFAIK a small hand at that) of distros that
that use Launchpad today, imagine there were a hundred? The current mail
everyone about every distro change is clearly unsuitable.

Ok. Let's start with adding a header than.

Proposition: If you're subscribed to a project or a distribution package, the only bug status changes in another project/distribution that are interesting to you are (1) it's marked Fixed in that other project while not being Fixed in yours (because you could reuse the fix), and (2) it becomes linked to an external bug tracker (because the discussion in the external bug tracker might contain clues for how to fix the bug).

I think this woud be definite progress.

I disagree. Because I care about a package in Ubuntu doesn't mean I want
bugmail from other distros. LP is very verbose with irrelevant details and it
would help a lot from my perspective if it would not email me random things.
I'd have voted for high as this is clearly just wrong, but please at least put
it back to medium.

@Scott, we don't use Medium for scheduling anymore: it is effectively
meaningless. You can see our policy at
https://dev.launchpad.net/BugTriage (and links from there to the
reasoning behind it)

So this change is merely reflecting the *existing* reality that it
wasn't scheduled, and as we have more bugs coming in than going out,
it never would be reached by simply working-the-queue.

To get it fixed it needs one of:
 - being part of a feature we work on - we scan for related bugs,
group and work on them together. We've just done an email feature, and
I'm not aware of another in the current plans we have (e.g. next 6-12
months)
 - a patch from someone personally interested in fixing it
 - to be escalated via the stakeholder process (there is an Ubuntu rep
for this, uhm, the name currently escapes me. It might be bryce).

HTH,
Rob

OK. Thanks for the explanation. Given how long this has been around, it's
