Bug Description

This may be more of a compiz issue than a gnome-panel issue, so a bug will be reported to them as well.

When any one using compiz attempts to connect to a Sun Secure Global Desktop server running the latest version of Tarantella (sgd v4.3), It attempts to load an applet into the system tray and receives an error:

Cannot connect the Tarantella Client Component on port [random high range port number].

When compiz is not running the applet runs without issue.

While it's probably not a compiz bug, I'll reassign it anyway.. feel free to reassign :)

I can reproduce it, since we are evaluating SSGD. Using sun-java6.

I need more information or instructions on how to reproduce (but I don't think I can run this app). I have no idea what information I need though as I have no idea what this app is, what it's trying to do, etc. Anything at all you can tell me could help.

SSGD has a client (java) which you can run and it connects to the webserver by opening a page on the default browser. The client fails with compiz but works with metacity, which might suggest that by debugging the client the issue should be fixed. The error message I get is:

X Error of failed request: BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied)
Major opcode of failed request: 28 (X_GrabButton)
Serial number of failed request: 2895
Current serial number in output stream: 2911

the client attaches to the system tray, and seems to use motif (=butt-ugly) :P

Oh, I might be able to give the client for testing, it's a few megabytes and shouldn't have any secrets in it other than the server address. I'll get back to you when I know.

ok, here's a link to the client, which should make it possible to test it:

Hello,

I installed the lattest client above and can report that the issue appears to be fixed in the latest version of Tarantella. I am still dealing with the issue on our older Tarantella servers. My work around is to connect to the older Tarantella servers using an XP vm.

Thanks.

really?? Doesn't work here when started directly from the webpage, but I'll try with the client then..

no, at least doesn't work with our servers, I get a BadAccess error with the client above.

Keep in mind that we have a couple of boxes that are running the latest
version of Tarantella (4.41-907) and I am using the latest client on my
desktop. The applet error is gone when connecting to the "new"
Tarantella hosts; however, I still get the error when connecting any
host running an older version of Tarantella.
