Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in ubiquity

I have the same problem with Hardy Heron Final 8.04 on an Intel Q35 system.
The system freezes completely at 46% during start the partitioner...

I've experimented a little with the Hardy LiveCD. It seems that the partitioner seeks for a device wich crashes the whole system.
If i try to install with the ubuntu installer ubiquity the system freezes completely at the step descibed above. No mousemovement is possible, the system simply does not response to nothing. (Never seen before that linux crashes - very strange!)

The same happens if i start gparted or partman manually: while seeking for devices the whole system crash.

If i start gparted with a device option: " gparted /dev/sda " then ist starts normally and partionioning works well on that device...
I haven't found yet wich device causes the system to crash but i try it in the next days.

Perhaps there is a commandline option to tell the partitioner wich device it only should have to use?

Installation with the alternate-cd works without any problems out of the box.

From the partman log: "parted_server: OUT: Device /dev/sdf has a logical sector size of 2048. Not all parts of GNU Parted support this at the moment, and the working code is HIGHLY EXPERIMENTAL."

Perhaps we're failing to handle the exception.

I have tested it with the desktop livecd of Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10 RC1 and the issue is gone.
No freeze with gparted anymore, the system is working very stable with the Intel D!35MP Mainboard now.

The same with Hardy 8.04.1 results in a complete freeze of the system, only a hardwarereset is possible...

For me the is bug solved for Intrepid Ibex. Thank You!

Hmmm....bug is back again :-(
The freeze does not happens, if i'm booting from an usbstick and no cd is in the DVD-drive.
I I boot from the LiveCD 8.10 final and the installation stops at starting the partitioner at 50%.

I believe now perhaps it could be a hardware issue with the dvd-drive?
The drive is the LG GDR-H30N with firmware v1.00 and there is no firmwareupdate available.
Can someone confirm this, please?

Yes, I can! I have the same drive and my ubuntu 8.10 system freezes while a disk is inside.
Hasn't anybody fixed it yet? I really would like to get it work. I posted a lot of system outputs in the German www.ubuntuusers.de
http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/freeze-durch-dvd-rom-lg-gdr-h30n/
What else can I do to help get this bug fixed.

thank you

frank

I had the same problem with Ubuntu 8.10 install.

What I found was that if you boot into the Live session and then click install in the System -> Administration menu the problem does not occur

@Colin: this should be fixed in libparted 2.0 and higher, any chance we can get that into Lucid?

This is a bug that has been getting more & more common in all applications that use libparted, including parted, gparted & ubiquity (e.g. it seems the iPod Shuffle & some other mp3-players trigger this).

BTW: I have submitted a patch upstream for GParted to ignore for now any device that has a logical sector size != 512, but if I know that some distros (e.g. Ubuntu ;) ) will ship libparted 2.x, I'll try to find a way to make this conditional (once we're sure gparted itself is safe...).
