No sound when muted in windows

Bug Description

On a Toshiba Tecra A9 I couldn't get sound to work with Ubuntu. Later I found out that I have to unmute the sound in Windows, then it work's in Ubuntu out of the box.
The problem is, that this mute-state is invisible in Ubuntu. I unmuted all, but couldn't get any sound.

The mute-state setting by windows also affects the BIOS (which normally beeps)

Possible explanation: The muting is done on some lower hardware level (ACPI) ? But that should be switchable by linux...

I have the same problem on my Toshiba Tecra M6. I am not entirely sure what all of the commands mean in the text file attached to emmet's comment above this comment, but I repeated most of them on my system and the results are pasted below. If I can provide any more information about my system, please let me know and I would be happy to do so.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Intrepid Ibex. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

I have this same problem in a Toshiba Satellite U200-SP7011. I muted the sounds in Windows XP, and now there seems to be no way to unmute it from Ubuntu. I am using Ubuntu 8.10.

I followed the instructions in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems, and the utils_alsa-info scripts created the next link:

http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=f55111afcf0e4768bc2d57da1adc560330c8b21c

I am also attaching the output of the script and changed the status of the bug to New as Dimitrios suggested. Thanks in advance for your help.

Does it make a difference if you shut down *completely* so you do a cold boot
into Ubuntu rather than doing a warm reboot?

No it does not make a difference, the problem appears in both cases when doing a cold boot or a warm reboot.
