Bug Description

Binary package hint: console-data

The only way (that I am aware of) to change the default keyboard mapping on a machine is by using 'dpkg-reconfigure console-data'. This would be used in changing the core keymapping from us to another language, dvorak, etc.

The problem is that console-data is not installed by default and is only available via universe. It would be helpful if this package were installed as part of the core installation so that switching core keymappings would not require 1) network based package installation 2) re-installation of the machine (only other known method).

Your instructions are out of date; this changed in 6.10, and console-data really is obsolete. Use 'dpkg-reconfigure console-setup'.
