Bug Description

Every now and then when I attempt to login I get these errors.

The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:Deskbar_Applet".
The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet".
The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_MixerApplet".
The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_MultiLoadApplet".
The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_Panel_TrashApplet"

Nautilus also fails to startup.

I worked around the problem by logging off. killall gconfd-2, and removing gconf-username and mapping-username, orbit-username files from the temp dir. Then the problem went away. However it eventually returns.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at [WWW] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in gdm.

Well I'm not quite sure what package it effects. But what I will do is the next time this error occurs (which shouldn't be too long from now) I will look over my system logs for any unusual error messages that may be related to this. Any other suggestions on what I can do to track down what package is causing this? It basically happens after I first log in, around the time the GNOME splash screen would show if enabled. I think it could be GDM or even gnome-panel or gnome-applets.

I can cofirm that error and at a first glance it appears as if only applets from the gnome-applets package (in my case 2.20.0-0ubumtu1) are affected.
I'm running Gutsy.

Just to confirm this keeps happening on more then a few of the systems here, this could be attributed to gconfd-2 or applets I guess...
It seems gconf-d is not stopping and then on reload applets dont work.
killing gconfd-2 and removing temp files with the word gconf in the /tmp dir seems to fix.

I can also confirm this on a brand new (as well as other separate) install of Gutsy (using LTSP5).

I have noticed that this happens a lot when I go from logging in directly at the server console, and then login via an LTSP client (or even VNC to the server). It seems that there's something happening when different login methods are used.

Maybe any earlier commenters can confirm this behavior? If not, it could be isolated (although I have 3 LTSP networks and it seems to be consistent on them all).

I had a similar problem on Fedora 7, which I worked-around by adding a line to /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default . The line I added is:

[ -d /tmp/orbit-$USER ] && rm -Rf /tmp/orbit-$USER

Basically, the /tmp/orbit-username/linc-* files were persisting after the X/GDM session had ended. This was causing the problems with GNOME applets.

This is a workaround, not a fix. It may cause unexpected behavior when you have concurrent logins as the same user.

I'm adding information here in case it may help in determining the cause of the problem:

This morning one of our Samba networked Ubuntu computers had the error message:
"Error: The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID: Gnome_fastuserswitchapplet". Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration?"
The workstation is a plain vanilla Ubuntu 7.10 i386 install which has been working for about a month. No updates have been applied yet. The stock desktop is used. It is networked with Samba. Two users are installed on this workstation.

One major network change was instituted last night -- we went from DHCP to static IPs. Systems were tested last night and the network was functional. This is a home network with a dialup connection, and we turn the network (workstations router and modem) off when not in use.

A nautilus bookmark exists on the problem workstation for a Samba shared file folder on another workstation.

When the workstation was started this morning, the routers and modem were turned off, as was the computer with the shared Samba file.

The error message appeared twice after two hard reboots. It appeared about a minute after the desktop was up.

A third attempt at booting was succesful and did not show the error message -- the router, modem, and shared folder workstation had been started BEFORE the reboot.

I'm wondering whether this problem is related to STATIC configured networks which are unresponsive, or unconnected.

I notice some additional evidence here (static IP, network non-functional, same error message):

Reading the prior Bug Description message to mine, above, I also recall that the problem workstation warned that two users were connected during shutdown last night.

These would have been samba network users connected to shared folders on the problem workstation.

I can comment, that when I had this problem, it was out of the blue. I do have a static IP (as mentione above), but I had had it for a long time when I had this problem. I am pretty sure it is related to gnome-applets because my solution was to purge and then reinstall that package. I don't think it is related to samba or multiple logins because I don't have any of that going on on my personal laptop...

If it helps, there's a somewhat lengthy (and growing) thread about this here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=608767

re:
The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet".

I had the problem return after occasionally fixing with /tmp/orbit-username file deletes,

But much worse: there was a crippling slowdown of the machine -- booting took forever, same error message returned, plus new ones about services unable to configure, took forever to navigate, error messages eventually would appear blank. I tried to go to Synaptic, but root password no longer worked. Sudo password no longer accepted in terminal.

Then:

1.) Booted into Recovery Mode
2 ) apt-get remove gnome-applets
3.) apt-get install gnome-applets
4.) apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
5.) Restart computer

The computer booted up normally, with no error messages. Speed was normal. Root password worked again.

I am experiencing the same problem, the differences being that I only receive the following errors:

The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_Panel_TrashApplet"
The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_MixerApplet".

Usually this only happens when I log out, and log back into my account.
I also experience a system slowdown, although my root password still works!
After a complete restart, the errors usually don't occur.
Today was the first day I received the same set of errors after a full restart.

In addition Nautilus does not work, and my desktop wallpaper, and occasionally the panels themselves, fail to load.

However, Thunar does work, all be it slowly.

I believe this issue was closed too soon. I am running hardy and I encounter this problem from time to time - I haven't noticed any regularity except that the last few days it keeps happening all the time so that's why I finally ended up here after googling about it.

Here is what I did to finally get rid of this error with the updated version of Ubuntu 7.10:
1. Open a terminal window by Ctrl-Alt-F2
2. At the prompt type "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop" without the quotes
3. On the next line type "sudo aptitude reinstall gnome-applets" without the quotes
4. If you get an error message you will need to also type "sudo dpkg --configure -a"
Don't switch back to the original Gnome window until all the operations complete
