Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

If X fails to start, I cannot switch away from the VT that X is running on via ctrl-FX. If X starts normally, then this works as expected. I've looked at the x logs, and the only difference I can see is that the VESA driver loads instead of the normal nvidia driver. I can reproduce this on my system pretty much as will. If additional information is needed, please let me know.

Please attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /etc/X11/xorg.conf from a working session, and the /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old from after running in Bulletproof-X mode. Also, attach /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe to see if anything weird happened in generating that.

Can you also try force-loading into BPX by logging in at the console, doing `/etc/init.d/gdm stop` and then invoking `/etc/gdm/failsafeXServer` directly and see what happens?

If the VT switching issue goes away, then that suggests some odd interaction with gdm.

If it is still present, then restart your system and then try running this command directly: `xinit xterm -- /usr/bin/X -br -once -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe`

Here are the logs. It took me a bit to figure out that bpx isn't called when kdm fails to load ;) Anyway, running failsafeXServer directly doesn't load bpx. It starts to load, but then aborts. I included the log xorg.log from that session as well, just in case you want to look at it. I don't see any fatal errors in it.

Since I couldn't even get into a bpx session directly, do you still want me to try running the last command there?

Hi Bob,

Sorry it's taken so long to respond. Could you test again with Hardy?

Shut down kdm or gdm, then run `xinit xterm -- /usr/bin/X -br -once -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe`, and see if the VT switching issue still exists. If that fails, then we can report this upstream for them to look into.

Thanks again!

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
